I switched a bunch of my Yahoo services to Google starting a year or so ago. I also switched my hosting to asmallorange.com.
As part of this process I use Google Apps extensively, including for my email. In fact I run a small business on Google apps.
One thing I have never done though is bought a domain from Google who I believe subcontracts to enom or godaddy. The pricing is $1O which includes full dns management, private registration and domain locking if you need it. Pretty good deal – especially with Google’s name behind it.

Google is actually an ICANN Accredited Registrar. They don’t buy through other registrars.

Choose one of our partners to register your domain
Google doesn’t register or host domain names. We’ve partnered with a few domain registration partners (registrars) that offer these services because it’s a lot easier to set up a Google Apps account this way. Continue with the pre-selected company or choose another one of our trusted domain registration partners to fulfill your request. Your new domain will be pre-configured to work with Google Apps so that you won’t need to manually modify your DNS settings.
